Liposuction & Fat Grafting
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is especially good for women and men who are of normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to look disproportionate to the rest of their body. These fat deposits are sometimes the result of heredity and usually do not respond to diet and exercise.
Fat grafting uses a similar technique to liposuction but in a slightly more gentle way. The fat that we retrieve from an area you would like treated is washed, filtered, and delivered in an injectable form to relocate the excess cells to a more desirable location.
Liposuction
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is especially good for women and men who are of normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to look disproportionate to the rest of their body. These fat deposits are sometimes the result of heredity and usually do not respond to diet and exercise.
Liposuction may be performed at any age but the best results are obtained when the skin has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal. It should be known that liposuction should not be used to treat obesity or be a substitute for poor diet and exercise. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite or loose saggy skin.
Areas that respond well to liposuction include:
- Thighs
- Hips and buttocks
- Abdomen and waist
- Upper arms
- Back
- Inner knee
- Chest area
- Cheeks, chin and neck
- Calves and ankles
It should be noted that due to individual physical factors, not everyone will achieve the same results from liposuction. At your liposuction consult you will discuss with your doctor the factors that may affect your results such as gaining or losing a significant amount of weight, size and shape of the areas in question, and the quality of your skin. As part of the liposuction consult the areas of interest will be evaluated, measured, and photographed for your medical records. Options and a recommended course of treatment along with the outcome and risks will also be discussed. Your personal desires are key in the decision making process.

Fat Grafting
Fat grafting has become a much more popular and mainstream operation over the past few years. The technique in a nutshell is to perform liposuction in a bit more gentle way, and the fat that we retrieve from an area you would like treated is washed, filtered, and delivered in an injectable form. Dr. Storm Plastic Surgery has one of the only specialized fat grafting liposuction machines in the Kansas City metro area. It is called body-jet® and it is specifically designed to take advantage of the liposuction fat for grafting. Fine needles are used to inject your own fat into areas where it is needed such as the face, back of the hands, breasts, or the buttocks. Some of the more common uses are rejuvenation of the back of the hands and adding fat to the face where loss of fat over the years has caused aging effects. Other uses are around breast implants, either for reconstruction or augmentation where contour irregularities or visible or palpable implants are an issue. One of the newer most popular uses is adding fat to the buttocks to create a more rounded, fuller appearance. The most common places the fat is retrieved from is the lower abdomen or the saddle bag area, or the inside of the thigh. Obviously patients are also desirous of improvement in these areas and this is the secondary payoff. Not all of the fat that is injected survives. Perhaps fifty percent of the fat volume that is injected on the day of surgery is absorbed and overcorrection is required in most areas other than perhaps the face. If this sounds like an option you would like to explore let us now and we would be happy to talk with you about it.
