Numbness & Pain

Our patients come to us for evaluation of numbness, tingling, swelling, pain, and or stiffness in the wrist, hands, or fingers. This pattern of symptoms helps our physicians determine the cause and the particular area (neck, elbow, wrist, hand) that may be the source of the problem. Numbness and Tingling in the Forearm, Wrist, Hands, or Fingers may be caused by the following:

  • Pressure on a nerve at a particular level known as compressive neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Disk or nerve root compression involving the cervical spine
  • Certain illnesses such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or alcoholism
  • Certain medications can cause numbness
  • Nutritional deficiencies such as Vitamin B

The most common cause of numbness and tingling in our patients is due to compressive neuropathy, especially carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. Local pressure applied on a particular nerve can compress the numbness and tingling.

Stiffness Of Hands, Wrist & Fingers

Our wrist and hands are very complex structures and when healthy move with ease and allow us to effortlessly perform thousands of intricate movements every day. However, when conditions cause stiffness in the wrist, hands, or fingers these intricate movements may become difficult to perform limiting our activities of daily living.

Problems that affect joint structures in the wrist, hand, and fingers can result in stiffness and limited movement. Normal, healthy joints have precise shaped matching surfaces that are covered with a smooth layer of cartilage which allows pain-free and full range of motion. Problems that affect the joint surfaces or the cartilage can alter the normal contour of the joint causing stiffness and loss of motion. Tendon and muscle injuries can cause them to get scarred down to the surrounding joint causing stiffness and resulting in loss of motion as well.
